OCSiAl and GEO Partner to Bolster Battery Supply Chain in Europe: Production of Graphene Nanotube Solution for High-Performance Cathodes

  • OCSiAl and GEO have signed a contract for OEM production of TUBALLTM BATT graphene nanotube suspension in Europe.
  • This nanotube suspension is designed for lithium-ion cathode applications and has been acknowledged by battery market leaders for its ability to increase energy density, boost discharge power, enhance safety, and improve cohesion between cathode particles.
  • The partnership will drive electromobility developments in Europe and advance local battery production.

Two Luxembourgian companies—OCSiAl, the world’s leading producer of single wall carbon nanotubes, and Green Energy Origin (GEO), a new energy integrated raw materials innovation technology platform—have signed a long-term manufacturing agreement. The agreement focuses on the production of TUBALLTM BATT graphene nanotube suspensions in the Czech Republic for improving the performance of cathodes in lithium-ion batteries. This strategic partnership will enhance the effectiveness, resilience, and sustainability of the overall European battery supply chain.

The planned annual production capacity is 10,000 metric tons of nanotube suspension, which is sufficient for enhancing the cathodes of up to 5 million EVs with typical 65–70 kWh battery packs. This product has already received market acceptance and is in high demand with producers of EV batteries with thick LFP and NCM cathodes, as well as those using advanced battery technologies, including high-nickel low-cobalt cathode materials and single crystalline NCM cathodes.

The nanotube suspension makes it possible to maximize energy density by increasing active material content up to 98.8%, thanks to 10–60 times lower loading of conductive additive in comparison to standard solutions. Additionally, it boosts discharge power, enhances safety due to lowering battery resistance (DCR), and improves cohesion between cathode material particles by creating a robust network of graphene nanotubes which bonds the particles together.

“Looking forward, our partnership will prioritize sourcing raw materials for batteries, enabling critical applications in electric mobility, energy storage, and robotics, all in pursuit of a more sustainable future. Together with OCSiAl, we are dedicated to achieving technical advancements, lowering carbon emissions, and refining manufacturing processes to drive a fully electric, sustainable future. We are excited to embark on this promising journey with such a respected company,” stated Martin Saewe, President of GEO Europe.

“OCSiAl has selected GEO for its OEM production in Europe thanks to their experience with cutting-edge technologies and established highly efficient manufacturing processes. The production processes will be designed and carried out in accordance with IATF 16949 and VDA 6.3 standards, tailored to meet the high demands of the automotive industry. The site will also be regularly audited by OCSiAl and its automotive clients,” said Konstantin Notman, CEO of OCSiAl Group.

Tony Ma, CEO of GEO, remarked: “This is a good start, and I am optimistic that our two companies will achieve even greater success together, contributing to a greener and cleaner planet. I have full confidence in this long-term partnership, as we share aligned values, strategic goals, a collaborative spirit, and robust supply chain capabilities.”

The new partnership enhances OCSiAl’s leadership of the global new energy material market. The company has licensed production partners Shanghai Haiyi and Shenyang Huijing for graphene nanotube-based suspensions in China for anodes and cathodes and has recently launched in-house manufacturing of nanotube dispersions for high-performance anode applications, including silicon-rich anodes and fast-charging graphite in Europe.
