Due to their properties, carbon nanotubes are genuinely the first universal additive that can be used to improve the performance of materials in various industries: Electrochemical power sources: lithium-ion batteries , Elastomers: tires and other rubber material , Polymer nanocomposite materials , Transparent conductive films .

Elastomers: tires and other rubber material

The automobile tire is the top mass-produced rubber product.

In 2012, the global tire market was estimated at $150 billion. In the next 6 years, market growth is expected to continue at an average rate of 8% per year. One of the key trends is the fast growth of the market share of silica-based “green” tires. The silica-based tires are forecasted to account for 1/3 of the overall tire market by 2018.

Tire key properties

The basic characteristics determining tire quality, i.e. durability, fuel efficiency, and traction control, are mostly defined by the tread material.

The main problem in the industry is that improvements in one of the parameters usually lead to deterioration in the other two.

The addition of carbon nanotubes to the thread material when producing tires provides a drastic improvement of all the key characteristics . This result can be achieved with CNT concentration in the range of only tenths to hundredths of a percent which allows maintaining the basic tire production technology unchanged.

OCSiAl results

The work on the modification of tread rubber compounds with TUBALL has been carried out by OCSiAl in partnership with Nizhnekamskshina OJSC. The objective of this work is to increase "green" tire durability.

“Green” tires are less rolling resistant and have better grip characteristics but they also have a major flaw that is a high scuffing rate as compared to the traditional kind. The usage of TUBALL TIRER modifier based on TUBALL compensates for the above shortcoming and at the same time provides improvement of the other parameters.

The purposely designed TUBALL TIRER formula based on Carbon Black/Silica and Buna rubber improved all the three key tire properties at the same time.

ADDITION OF 0.03% OF TUBALL INCREASED ALL THE TIRE PARAMETERS AT THE SAME TIME:

  • INCREASE IN SERVICE LIFE (DURABILITY) +6 %;
  • FUEL EFFICIENCY +9.6 %;
  • IMPOVEMENT OF TRACTION CONTROL: +2.5 %.

    KAMA-EURO 195/65/R15 with TUBALL RUBBER
    

An experimental batch of "green" KAMA Euro 195/55/R15 tires has been tested* at the special test site of Applus IDIADA in Spain. The tests are:

  • Subjective estimation of drive comfort and control;
  • Estimation of inner and external noise levels;
  • Estimation of the breaking path on dry and wet surfaces.

The tires demonstrated higher results in comparison with their mass-produced analogues. The overall rating of the tire properties has improved from “acceptable” to “good”.

*Test goal: evaluation of tire performance in terms of drive comfort and control when driving a Volkswagen Polo. Ratings are subjective (they are not calculated as an arithmetic average). Various estimates have been considered for each item since some items are more important than others. The estimates are given on a 10 point scale.

Industrial rubber products

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ONE OF THE FOUR GLOBAL LEADERS IN TIRE AND RUBBER PRODUCT MANUFACTURING (NAME IS NOT DISCLOSED, NDA).

Unlike the tire industry, the vast class of industrial rubber products requires not only mechanical performance, but also electric conductivity through which rubber products do not accumulate static electricity.

Experiments carried out have shown that graphene tubes TUBALL increased rubber conductivity by 4 times with only HALF of MWCNT sample's concentration.
